I love Troma. Everything I usually watch by them I love (the ones they actually make though). My first introduction to The Toxic Avenger was the animated TV series Toxic Crusaders. As a child I love the show and even collected the action figures when they were released. My favorite character was Toxie, Of Coarse.
When I found out there was a movie based on the show, I had to see it. I was lucky enough to find a copy at the video store and my mom rented it for me. You should of seen the expression on my (and my mom’s) face when images of crushed heads and female nudity filled the screen. My mom refused to let me finish the film, but throughout the years I watched the film, showing it anyone who came over to my house. It became my horror party movie where I would screen the movie for people and they would love it. Here I am today, having watched the movie more times then I can count.
The Toxic Avenger is a B-movie classic and my favorite Troma movie to date. It’s cheap, gory as hell and fun to watch. I can’t see anyone who loves low budget movies not getting a kick out of it.
The Acting is bad. Everyone gives a bad performance. But you know what? I don’t give a shit. It works extremely well with the nature of the film.
The Directing isn’t stylish or big, but simple and Effective enough to bring the images to the screen.
The Make-up FX for the film is brilliant. The make-up artist Jennifer Aspinall deserves a big pat on the back for the wonderful job of bringing the Toxie to life. Mitch Cohen also does a wonderful job of bringing the movements of Toxie to life. The Gore FX is cheap, in a good way. They’re all done in a simple and low budget way. Trust me; you’ll never forget the head crushing in the opening of the film, which was created just using a melon, corn syrup and some red dye.
The humor of the movie is not all slapstick like in the sequels, but more in the way of the dialogue. If you don’t find a little person being shoved in a dryer by our hero then this might not be your type of movie. Personally, I found it funny as hell.
The music is pure 80’s cheese. ‘Nuff said.
You’ll never be bored by this movie as it movies at lightning speed. Those 82 minutes go by really fast.
Toxic Avenger does feature some underdeveloped characters (the villains mostly) but in my opinion is a perfect B-movie. It has it all, Gore, Tits, Humor and Action. I suggest any fan of low budget humor to give this a view, its well worth it.

You know when you see previews for a movie and you say to your friends, I bet they showed all the funny parts in the previews. Well Date Movie did exactly that, this is quite possibly the worst movie ever made. I wouldn’t even suggest waiting for it to come out on DVD and then renting it, instead of taking the 2 hours to get the movie and watch it, you can just watch your grandmother knit, trust me you will enjoy that much more. I can’t even believe this movie made it to theaters, I doubt it will even make it to blockbuster, I think its going straight to the $5.50 bin at Wal-Mart. Seriously I would rather watch Gigli then this movie!
Date Movie is the story about Julia Jones (Alyson Hannigan) a woman who is looking for her Prince and wont stop until she finds the man of her dreams. This man turns out to be Grant Funkyerdoder (Adam Campbell) who is the dreamy British Beau who falls for her. Then basically four main movies are plagiarized (not well might I add) to fill in most of the movie. Those movies are Hitch, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Meet the Parents, and Meet the Fockers. Basically recycling the jokes from those movies then adding more farts and vomit, because adding farts and vomit definitely ignites hilarity (its hard to relay sarcasm in written form).
They throw in a mix of crap jokes like J-Lo’s huge butt from the wedding planner, A Napoleon Scene, and a horrible attempt at recreating the faking of an orgasm at the dinner table from the movie When Harry Met Sally. Most fo the jokes are redone verbatim and not any funnier then in the original movies, others they just made them more over the top, often times making the joke last to long and become either long and over done, or just plain embarrassing All in all I would say that they were missing the other 4 writers and as weird as this sounds some Wayan talent would have helped this movie (yeah that is how bad it was, it needed the Wayan’s to make it better).
What else can I say about this atrocious movie? Well on the upside (Sophie Monk) plays the best friend of Grant Funkyerdoder and she is almost always in some sort of bikini, which makes any scene with her in it the only tolerable part of this movie. If I was Alyson Hannigan I would have fired my agent for telling me to agree to this movie, I hope she didn’t read the script first. And Eddie Griffin what was he thinking? He must have needed some fast cash to pay off a bookie or something.
Well you know my view of this movie is not a positive one but you can check out other critic’s thoughts on it. Trust me I read some other reviews and the only people who said to go watch this movie was Entertainment Weekly. If you trust them then spend your 9 dollars and come out of the theater angry wishing you had listened to me and my infinite wisdom.

As fancy as your home theater system might be, it is still tough to beat the experience of going to the movies. Whether you are on a date, or have some time on your hands, the movies offer an escape in the dark. Capture the magic at the following three theaters in the Dallas/Fort Worth Mid-Cities area.
AMC Grapevine Mills theater complex offers thirty screens varying in size from gigantic to regular. As part of Grapevine Mills Mall, Grapevine, Texas, the theater area has access to retail and discount shopping as well as restaurant and food court choices. You can make a day of it and see multiple movies. Discount pricing is available for shows prior to six p.m., and there is student and senior pricing. Shows start at noontime and run all day.
The theater offers the usual snack choices from popcorn to nachos to pickles. It is a Pepsi brand operation, so your selection of beverage is from the Pepsi family. The décor is fairly garish and you feel a bit wound up as you make your way to the theater. There is plenty of staff and the place is kept clean. The floors do not crunch under your feet as you make your way to your seat, which is stadium seating in all thirty rooms. The seating is a bit of a problem. It is cushy enough, but the seatbacks sit very upright. There is no rocking, no leaning, and slouching is difficult. Do not see a long movie in this theater. Your back and neck will be tired after two hours.
AMC runs the usual amount of advertising and previews. Out of thirty screens, they do show a few off beat movies along with the normal mainstream fare. The quality of sound and projection is what you would expect from a large chain operation. Everything is very professional, and AMC Grapevine Mills does work hard to give you a decent movie experience.
One of the first stadium seating venues, in the Mid-Cities, Tinseltown Grapevine is a stand-alone theater in Grapevine, Texas offering fourteen screens. They feature two large theaters with seventy-five foot screens and excellent Dolby sound systems. The theater is located along Highway 114, and a row of restaurants is nearby. You can have a dining and movie date without going out of your way.
Tinseltown offers a very inexpensive first show of the day price of $5.50. After that, they offer a matinee price until six p.m. along with senior and student discount pricing. There is the usual snack area with Coca-Cola beverages. Tinseltown has an expanded café area offering pizza, hamburgers, and sandwiches at reasonable prices.
During the day, the Tinseltown workers are hustling. Some are cashiers and ticket-takers. Or the snack dispensers are ticket-takers. At times, the clean up in public areas leaves a bit to be desired. However, the plus side to Tinseltown is the seating – comfy wide seats that rock and lean at a very comfortable slant. Widely spaced aisles and stadium seating allow you to enjoy your movie experience. Tinseltown promotes the mainstream first run movies. With good projection and Dolby sound, you will be absorbed into the joy of a good movie.
Rave Motion Pictures are new to the area. Their theater at the North East Mall in Hurst, Texas is a welcome addition to the Mid-Cities. As part of the mall complex, the theater is near retail shopping, food courts, and stand-alone restaurants. Clean and modern in design, the Rave offers a very pleasant movie watching experience. Plenty of help keep the place rolling efficiently. The seats are a comfortable medium between the AMC and Tinseltown.
State of the art projection and sound give very crisp showings, and the Rave does not bombard you with an overabundance of advertisements. The Rave does offer one or two indie features along with the normal commercial load. The North East Mall needed a good quality theater, and the Rave is in position to draw attendance from the Grapevine theaters. The winners are movie-going fans.

Roberto Benigni's extremely popular film Life is Beautiful is an exercise in absolute positivism, despite the progressively dismal setting and the disappointments its main characters must face. The principle character, Guido (played by Benigni), is a model of positive living. This extends, perhaps simply through contact with Guido, to his family-wife Dora (played by Benigni's wife, Nicoletta Braschi) and son Giosue (played by Giorgio Cantarini)-who carry core values shared by Guido throughout the film. Specific types of positive living as outlined by Loren Ford (2004) in his book “Human Relations: A Game Plan for Improving Personal Adjustment” portrayed in the film include: strong values; firm decision making; meaning through dedication and service to others; flow through creativity; love; and letting go (pp. 271-290).
Early on in the film we are introduced to Guido's charm and sense of humor in his absolute pursuit of his love, Dora, in an attempt to lure her away from her fiancé and convince her that he (Guido) is the right man for her to love. Guido displays unfailing optimism in this goal. His love extends after marriage, is bestowed upon their son, and remains in full effect even under the most difficult and horrifying of circumstances. His dedication to Dora is inspiring.
Furthermore, Guido's sense of purpose includes his responsibilities as a husband and father, and he serves his wife and son unfailingly. The movie ends with the family in a Nazi concentration camp, owing to the fact that Guido is a Jew. Ford (2004) writes that “To help, nurture, or serve others provides meaning for many individuals (p.276).” This is certainly true in Guido's case, and there is no more straightforward an example than his final sacrifice on behalf of his wife: he risks certain death to attempt to rescue her after making many attempts to contact her through various creative and comical means. He is, in fact, captured and murdered by camp guards. It is a bittersweet ending to a life defined by acts of altruism.
Guido also displays tremendous dedication to his goal of opening a bookstore, thereby finding meaning in the task of becoming a bookstore owner. When he relocates from the country to the city to find work, it is his ultimate desire. He works hard at other jobs he has no particular interest in performing, such as working at a hotel, until he is able to achieve his dream. It is his resourcefulness, optimism, and creativity that help him to be successful in all but his final major goals.
Another example of creativity is in how Guido finds “flow” in his life. Ford (2004, p. 283) relates how researcher Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi found that flow can be considered “the enjoyment we experience when we are engaged in mental and physical challenges that absorb us.” Ford (2004) further explains how Csikszentmihalyi suggests that one method of achieving flow through creativity is in being creative problem solvers. Guido is the ultimate creative problem solver, thinking fast on his feet in all circumstances.
One example of this is in the “game” he devises when in the concentration camp to protect his son from the Nazis. He tells Giosue that the camp is part of a grand game, the prize of which is a genuine tank. He then gives Giosue a set of instructions, adding to the list as is necessary, to keep his son from suffering unduly.
Another example of how Guido employs creative problem solving with respect to his son is in a poignant moment when Giosue inquires as to the meaning of the signs restricting the freedoms of Jews and dogs (degradation in itself). Guido explains how there is no real logic to this, and it is simply a random selection of groups of people and things. He makes light of it in an attempt to reduce any measure of distress.
Another method of positive living suggested by Ford (2004, p. 272) is values. Both Guido and Dora display unfailing values, never wavering even in the face of absolute adversity. Dora has the choice of abandoning her family or being taken with them by the Nazis, and still she remains true to her husband and son. She does this knowing it means she will end up in a camp herself. It is also an example of making a difficult decision, which is no strange concept to Guido, either.
Guido's last decision is arguably the most difficult decision any human must make: a decision of life or death. His choice to attempt to find Dora is one that comes with death, should he fail. He is aware of this danger when he tells his son to hide and attempts his bold goal. And yet he perseveres, decisively, and it is this courage that I carried with me from the scene, despite its painful end with Guido's death.
Guido's final actions are guided by immense love, and it is his love that brightens the world for those around him. He fairly well exudes love and passion, which I personally found to be deeply inspiring. Ford (2004, p. 286) talks about the importance of love in positive living, and there are few goals as noble as spreading love in the world. Guido does this by touching individual lives. This is, I believe, the best way that any of us can affect positive, loving change: by making the effort to bring love into even one life during the course of our own. Guido succeeds not only in the film, but in the audience. Benigni's brilliant character has touched countless viewers.
Finally, Ford (2004, pp. 285-286) discusses a difficult but important task in well-being and positivism: letting go-the ultimate act of forgiveness. It is one thing to accept an apology, or even to forgive those who have wronged us but not apologized, but it is quite another to give up the hurt and move on. This is the essence of letting go. I believe that one specific example of letting go is seen in the final moments of Guido's uncle's life. As he is facing death in the concentration camp, a female guard trips before him. He helps her, an act that seems mystifying when you consider that the Nazi's have sealed his fate. Yet I believe he has forgiven them and let go of the hurt. He has made peace and his compassion triumphs over any negative feelings.
This seminal film is in itself a way to live more positively! I challenge anyone to view it and not take away from it at least one lesson for living a more positive life. Whether that lesson is employed is up to the individual, but I believe this movie is as educational as Ford's text when it comes to demonstrating positive lives.

I have already written an article about what to do if you miss a television show. Most networks have their programming available online so you can watch a missed show at your convenience, as long as you wait a half-day or so after the new episode ends.
Now I'm going to take you to the next level. Right now, television and the Internet are living in a temporary cease-fire that will soon erupt into a full-blown war. The first opposing side offers just-released television at set times, while the second offers commercial-free viewing whenever the viewer wishes. The second is slowly beating the former, and the only copyright laws keep the first on top.
This is a problem that television programming itself is slightly responsible for. For some odd reason, more television shows have shifted away from the episodic format. Sure, you may be able to watch The Simpsons in any order, but what about shows like Prison Break, 24, or Grey's Anatomy? These shows have a definite “story-arc” that demand every episode be watched, in a specific order. The days of just sitting down and having a “one-night stand” with a show are over as more and more shows demand commitment. The problem is by the by the time a viewer learns a show is worth watching, he or she has to get “caught-up” in order to tune in.
Now, the viewer could use a VCR, DVR, or buy the TV on DVD editions, but there is a cheaper, less time-consuming solution that more and more internet users are opting for: watch it on a video-posting site. Sites like YouTube used to just host personal videos, but it soon became crammed with other material such as television episodes. One can find several full-length Simpsons episodes on YouTube, usually in sliced up into parts. However, if you're willing to wait on the loading time (which is getting faster each day) you can have, at your fingertips, a number of Simpsons to watch at any time. There are other sites like www.veoh.com and www.dailymotion.com, and some episodes were ready at a click's notice.
I'm certain that TV episodes that end up on these sites are no doubt illegal. Most of these video hosting sites say that they screen out “third-party material”, but TV shows from every network are getting through the cracks. In fact, I have found sites like www.peekvid.com and www.yourtvlinks.com which are essentially lists of links to shows. However, a recent trip to www.yourtvlinks.com has shown a complete redeux that is more of quickly-made Adsense site than what it was before. Something tells me that someone cracked down on this site.
The same thing happened to me when I found a YouTube subscriber who had almost the whole first season of Futurama. One day it was there, and the next day a sign saying: “This site has been removed by 20th Century Fox”. I wonder who it is that polices the net looking for episodes like this. Considering how large the internet is, I wonder if it is possible to scan the Internet for illegal TV shows.
So far, I don't know how bad this issue will get. It could be as bad as the Napster controversy, but I'm not seeing any PSA ads telling me not to go online and look for episodes of TV shows yet. As it is, you can usually find what you are looking for on Video search engine. All you need is the show's title, season number, and episode number. Sometimes you can search by episode title.
I am, of course, not recommending that any person who reads this article go out and search for their favorite TV show online. However, I will say that I don't know the legality of this issue. I don't know what would happen if you're caught watching a TV show on a video hosting site that shouldn't have been there in the first place. As I've said before, I don't know how this could be policed.
Personally, I'm thinking that it is a sign that we are moving into a new age of television. No longer are we dependent on the remote, but rather the search engine and video hosting site to meet our TV entertainment needs. I'm guessing that soon all the networks will be online instead of on the air. Now we just have to live with the consequences.

Denver offers so many places to dine. There's an Applebee's, Ruby Tuesdays or a McDonald's on every major street. What you might not know about Denver is its numbers of movie theaters. For those people travelling through Denver, here is a list of places in alphabetical order in which to stop and enjoy a good movie.
Elvis Cinemas Arvada 8 (http://movies.aol.com/theater/elvis-cinemas-arvada-8/4520/showtimes) is located at 5157 W. 64th Ave, Arvada, CO 80003. This “dollar theatre” is an old, homely, and friendly place to enjoy a film that you never got to see for the standard $7 – 10 admission. Obviously within its limited funding, this movie theatre may not offer the best in picture or sound quality. But overall, if you're strapped of cash and you always wanted to but haven't gotten the chance to see the new Tom Cruise or Ving Rhames or Adam Sandler film, this is the place to go. Prices are approximately $2 – $3. For the top movie theatres in Denver, you can't find any more affordable or enjoyable than this.
Century 16 Belmar (http://movies.aol.com/theater/century-16-belmar/4531/showtimes), located at 440 S. Emergence of ‘womanist’ cinema
Women in Senegal have emerged from a society of rigid religious, cultural, and social traditions. They are the pillars of the community, however they are not recognized as such in the post-colonial societies plagued by the reign of patriarchy. [In mainstream West African Cinema] “there are almost no positive heroines. Film-makers are quick to show us the examples that must not be followed, but rarely do they present women with their qualities as well as faults without judging them.” African feminist filmmaker Ousmane Sembene challenges the notions that the women of African Cinema are misrepresented by the male gaze of directors. He is a strong advocate for socialism, egalitarianism, Pan-Africanism, and the liberation of the psychologically enslaved Africans who cannot “see”, “hear”, nor “speak” for themselves. His films show the heroism of women once entrapped by patriarchy, family structure, religious hegemony, traditional customs, and male prejudice. The majority of Sembene’s films focus on courageous, resisting women who fight to survive at the face of patriarchal adversity or refuse to accept the traditions that oppress them.
The women of Sembene’s films are not victims of their reality, instead they take proactive roles in altering their destinies for emancipation even if the action proves tragic. The heroines in Sembene’s films evolve as he transforms and matures as a skilled director. From Diouana to Rama to Faat Kine, the women gain stronger voices and more control of their destinies in post-colonial Senegal as Sembene’s career ripens. How do the female characters in comparison to the greater society and their male counterparts articulate what he perceives about the emancipation of a post-colonial Senegal at large? As Sembene constructs new representations of women he also provides uncompromising critiques of patriarchal male characters, who do not alter their chauvinistic and sexist prerogatives. His works appear to prioritize the female point of view thus, taking a feminist or “womanist” stance on what it means for Africa to be a liberated nation. Sembene’s works reflect his observations that “Africa can’t develop without the participation of her women…we are still searching for our destiny as Africans. Yet in the society we are going to build, women will play an important role.”
